Honda - K-Series VTC Oil Control Valve Assembly 

It is an electrically controlled hydraulic valve used in the engine’s variable valve timing system.

The solenoid’s job is to control the flow and pressure of engine oil going to the variable valve timing mechanism. The engine computer (ECU/PCM) commands the solenoid to open or close as operating conditions change. By directing pressurized oil to the camshaft timing actuator, the system can advance or retard camshaft timing. This allows the engine to adjust valve timing according to RPM, engine load, temperature, and driving conditions.

In practical terms, this component helps the engine achieve a better balance of power, fuel efficiency, smooth operation, and emissions control. At lower engine speeds, the computer can select cam timing that favors smoothness and efficiency; under acceleration or higher loads, it can alter the timing to improve engine response and performance.
