What it does

This is not an ordinary mounting bolt. It is a special shoulder/pivot bolt used in the engine’s timing-chain system. The threaded end screws into the engine, while the larger smooth cylindrical shoulder provides a controlled pivot surface for the timing-chain guide/tensioner assembly.

As the timing-chain tensioner applies pressure, the associated guide needs to move slightly so that it can maintain proper tension on the timing chain. This bolt secures that guide while simultaneously providing its pivot point. The unusual shape you can see in your photos—the short threaded section followed by a much wider, smooth cylindrical body—is intentional.

Maintaining the correct movement and positioning of the timing-chain guide is important because the timing chain synchronizes the engine’s crankshaft and camshaft(s). The pivot bolt therefore plays a small but important mechanical role in keeping the guide correctly located and allowing the tensioning system to operate as designed.
